Temple Guide

Complete Lempuyang Temple Guide

Everything you need to know about visiting Bali's iconic Gates of Heaven.

Pura Lempuyang Luhur, commonly known as Lempuyang Temple, is one of Bali's oldest and most sacred Hindu temples. Located on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in East Bali, the temple complex dates back over 2,000 years and is considered one of the island's six key sanctuaries. The temple's famous Gateway of Heaven offers stunning views of Mount Agung perfectly framed between its split gates, creating one of the most photographed scenes in all of Indonesia.

The Gates of Heaven Photo

The iconic reflection photo at the Gates of Heaven became famous worldwide through social media, drawing millions of visitors each year. The mirror-like effect is created using a simple smartphone held beneath the camera lens by temple staff, reflecting the gate and Mount Agung to create a stunning symmetrical image. While the reflection is a photography trick rather than an actual natural phenomenon, the result is a beautiful and memorable photo that captures the spiritual essence of Balinese temple architecture.

Temple Complex Overview

Lempuyang is not a single temple but a complex of seven temples spread across the mountain, requiring a challenging 1,700-step climb to reach the main sanctuary at the summit. Most tourists visit only the lower temple, Pura Penataran Agung, where the famous gates are located. This section is easily accessible without any strenuous hiking. For those seeking a spiritual journey, the full pilgrimage to all seven temples takes approximately 4-6 hours and is considered a sacred act of devotion in Balinese Hinduism.

What to Wear and Bring

As a sacred religious site, Lempuyang Temple requires modest dress. Both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees, and sarongs are provided at the temple entrance if needed. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the temple grounds include uneven stone surfaces. Bring sun protection, water, and your camera for photos. Our tour includes sarongs if you don't have appropriate clothing, ensuring you're prepared for a smooth temple visit.

Best Time to Visit

We highly recommend early morning arrival, ideally by 7:00 AM, before the crowds descend. During peak tourist season, wait times for the Gates of Heaven photo can exceed 2-3 hours later in the day. Our tours depart early to ensure you arrive at the temple when it opens, giving you ample time for photos with smaller crowds. Clear skies in the morning also provide the best visibility of Mount Agung in the background, though clouds can obscure the view by midday.
